This is an amazing little paper for you - and, very valuable reference material for the researcher in the Antarctic! The author has collected all the recent reports of icebergs in the southern ocean - recent being 1891 to 1895 - and compiled them here. He had noticed a trend of heavier and heavier ice and wanted to quantify it - he called it a remarkable outburst of icebergs in parts of the ocean where they are very dangerous to navigation. The paper is 9x5.5", 31p. A large part of the paper consists of a table detailing sightings of icebergs : each sighting has reference number, date, ship's name, latitude, longitude, and remarks (typically describing the berg or bergs). Fine type - lots of information. He mentions Lieutenant Maury a number of times (see my related auction running now!), and gives specific sources for information (people, papers, ships). Some of the ships mentionedare : Cutty Sark, Erin's Isle, Ladas, Bungaree, and Oronsay. This pertains mostly to the area between the Cape of Good Hope and Australia. CONDITION: Fair. Uncut, never used. Clean and text intact. Two corners noticeably bumped, entire page block has a 1/2" slit tear at lower margin - no paper missing. Front cover present, but detached with heavily chipped edges and owner's stamp. Back cover missing. Please note : The title pages lists a plate, but it is not present - it must have been just in front of the back cover and surely must have showed a photo of an iceberg. $12 Magmatic affinities of some Volcanic rocks from the Tweed Shield volcano, S.E.
