60 % off the listed price of the BAAS Reports on this page!
HARDBOUND, 9x5.5", Index, most are around 3"
thick, embossed cover, gold lettering on spine. Some plates and
fold-outs. Each book is divided into sections : the basic business
of the association, the "Reports on the State of Science,"
and the "Transactions of the Sections." Each issue has
a sizable list of members at the back - I have not included these
pages in the page count. All book titles follow this pattern "Report
of the Forty-Seventh Meeting of the British Association for the
Advancement of Science, held at Plymouth in August, 1877.
The "Reports" make up the bulk of the book
and selected reports (2-35p. long)
are listed below, primarily paleontology-, hydrology- and
geology-related topics. The "Transactions"
are short pieces generally half a page to a full page long
(rarely, just the title) and I have listed a few of these. Very
often a topic will appear in both reports and transactions. Both
reports and transactions cover topics in all aspects of what was
then current science - I have listed only a few of the individual
topics and have usually abbreviated the titles. Much of what is
covered in these books concerns ongoing projects, thus the same
topic may be present in several books in a row even if I have listed
it only for a few. Many of the titles include wording such as "Report
of the committee, consisting of Mr. ... ... ..., appointed for the
purpose of ... ... ..."
Not listed below : There are large sections on Meteorology
(esp. Ben Nevis), tides, and anthropology and ethnology of the population
of the British Isles. Also ongoing series on electrical experiments,
development of research stations, effects of sun on dyes, measuring
solar insolation, ground temperature, science in education and much
more. Ships, sailing, navigation and steering. Sewage treatment.
Rainfall records. Economic science and statistics.
Condition:
Generally good/ very good : clean, bright, tight except as noted
below. Some spines have the meeting number crayoned on. Covers have
some soil with bumped corners and spine ends. Upper edge of page
block darkened, other edges often a bit darkened or with minor soil..
Hinges may be very lightly shaken with cracked paper over the hinge
inside. For a few, the page block may have a slight ripple - this
is from the original binding, not from any damage. Title page darkened.
